It's All Worth It

Folks ask me why we live so far way from the city, besides the clean air, big house, acres of land and not having our neighbors right next to us.. I get to wake up to this.

My Shiny New Hat

My friend Eva's sister was making Jayne hats and I have always wanted one but you can't really buy them unless someone makes it. And luckily Eva tweeted about her sister. So I put my order in and today when I went to the mail box (forgot to go on Saturday) I found my hat.. I LOVE IT!!!!

PS.. If you are wondering what this is from then I am sad for you as you are missing out on an one of my all time FAVORITE TV series ever.. "Firefly" from Joss Whedon. In one of the episodes tough guy Jayne Cobb gets this hand made hat from his momma.

Avatar (second screening)

Today I went and visited my Dad. Wasn't feeling 100% but I had promised to visit a few weekends ago and thing kept popping us so I haven't seen him in a while. We first went out to lunch at Islands and after we to the movies. It was between Percy Jackson and Avatar. I had seen Avatar once already but really wanted to see it again. Dad brought up a good point saying that Avatar 3D needs to be seen in the theater and Percy Jackson could be seen on DVD. So we opted for Avatar.

I loved it just as much my second time. It's still a beautiful world, sweet love story and great commentary about our world. The 3D enhances the visuals but this movie is so good it will be great in 2D when it comes out on DVD. Another cool think is my Dad really enjoyed it. Normally when we get out of movies we say if we liked it or not but don't really discuss it much.. not with this one we talked all the way out of the theater and in the car and a bit when we got home. I could tell his was a favorite and I'm glad we were able to see it in 3D.

Now I want to see it in 3D IMAX before it leaves theaters.. that's my next goal.

My Little Guy

Update on my Nephew Kenobi.. he's going on nine months and you would never know he was born a month early. He's getting big, his teeth are coming in and he's trying to walk. I don't get to see him as often as I would like but I try and visit with him whenever I visit my Dad, even if it's just a half hour, I cherish ever minute. I hope when he gets a little older he'll be able to spend the weekend with us.

Being Sick

I haven't really felt 100% for a few weeks but today it finally knocked me down. Seemed everything I had hurt my stomach. My head was killing me and it felt like something was poking my eyeballs from the inside. My body aches and my left ear was killing me. Even though I had tons of stuff I could be doing I opted to sit, relax and watch TV. Harry seemed to have it worse then me.. so I guess I got off easy.

One of Those Weeks

Work has been hellish, it's not so much the work as the no knowing. We haven't been behind schedule the entire time but this is made worse when I don't even know what's happening the next week. Circumstance keep happening and it seems to push us further and further behind and the bad thing about that is the schedule was tight already so it's nearly impossible to catch up. No matter how much pre-planning you do one little thing through the entire machine out of whack. And this in turns causes tons of unnecessary stress... TGIF!!!

I'm thankful for my job as I have tons of friends who are jobless.. but sometimes it's just not worth the stress.

Postponing Housewarming

We heard rumors that it might rain this weekend, Sunday we planned on having our housewarming party so we had to decide on taking a chance or postponing the BBQ. Since we live out in the middle of no where and on dirt roads we opted to postpone the BBQ housewarming. It will be better for everyone is they don't have to drive on the wet dirt roads and they will be able to enjoy our place more with nicer weather.. so will be having our housewarming party sometime in March. Good thing is it will give us more time to fix up our place.. still have some odds and ends to take care of.

Happy Valentine's Day

Neither Harry nor I are really into this holiday but we did go out for a "Valentine" lunch at Chills. But that was the extent of our holiday.

Yep.. more painting

Today Harry and I finally got some motivation to do a little touch up painting in the master bathroom, master bedroom and laundry room. We didn't get it all done but we did get a start and that's the important part.

Recording a Podcast

I had scheduled to record a podcast even though we had friends over, I was willing to give them a half hour of my time so I could get back to my friends. Well things didn't turn out as I had planned. We were recording a skype call with several Guild fans who were given the Season 3 DVD early and we were to talk about the DVD extras. It was to start a 5 and right from the beginning people kept dropped out of the call. We tried and tried to get everyone in the call but kept losing folks.. finally around 5:45 I went out to my friends and told them that we haven't even started yet. That I was sorry but I wasn't sure how long it was going to take. They understood and we had a nice visit so they decided to head home as it was getting late.

Went back to the skype call and finally made the call that we would just have to start without everyone. This was already taking a hour and we hadn't even begun yet. So we started around 6:00 and I then had issues with my recording programs as it wouldn't record the conversation. Instead of restarting my computer we had several other folks on the call record it. So about 6:10 we started his skype chat.

The chat moved along, folks were dropped and I'd add them back again and again. Finally around 7pm we finished this "quick" skype call. Brian emailed me his recording of the call, which was okay but had some audio glitches but it was the best we had.. Now I had to edit it and post it on our website as the DVD is coming out in a few days. I finally got everything edited and posted around 11pm. In the end it turned out to be a pretty cool podcast.

Lunch with Friends

Today our friends John and Moises came out to our house to visit for the first time. We also have a nice BBQ and played some board games. They seemed to really like our place which makes all our hard work worth it. It was a nice and relaxing visit. It's always nice hanging out with those two.

Taxes (Results)

This morning when I got up I had an email from my tax guy with the estimates of my Federal and State refund checks.. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised for Federal it looks like I'm getting 7 times the amount I normally do and for State it looks like 6 times the amount.. needless to say I was very happy. Just one thing stands in the way. I need my house paperwork showing that I actually purchased the house to get the $8000 deduction, and of course the paperwork I have there are no official signatures so I'm waiting to hear from my tax guy on what I need to provide next. Hopefully it's an easy fix and I will get close to the estimates that he provided.

Taxes

Today I went to see my Tax guy and do my 2009 taxes. I knew this year would be a bit different since I purchased a house. I normally go in and we sit down for a half hour and go over all my expenses and such and then he gives me an estimate on how much I'll be getting back from Federal and State (as I've always gotten a refund). This time because of the addition of the house and all the deductions that come with that he was unable to give me a number which kind of worried me but he did say that I should still be getting a refund. So now I have to wait and see just how much of a refund.

This morning I packed up a bunch of them to take to the post office along with autographed pictures for those who made donations.. well the weather worked against me and I was unable to get to the post office.. hopefully tomorrow things will be better.. so if I owe you a shirt or autograph picture it's been delayed a day.

Work around the House

Because I was so lazy on the weekend and didn't get nearly as much stuff done as I wanted to I figured when I got home from work I could start working on some minor things.. so tonight I putted up some chunks of trim that were knocked out when pictures fell. And also putted up some holes in our master bathroom. Once they dry I can sand them down and paint them. Slowly but surely we are going to get these things done.

Dinner

Tonight when I got home and as soon as I opened the door a wonder smell greeted me. Three times last week and now today Harry has made dinner. He's using his German cook book and making some wonderful dishes. I can get use to coming home from work and having dinner made for me already.

Lazy Sunday

Today we had planned to finish up the painting but may both Harry and I are burnt out and didn't feel like doing it.. instead we sat in front of the TV and chilled. I felt horrible for not doing some work but obviously I didn't feel bad enough to get up and do it. I mean we still have two weeks before the housewarming. ( I know this will come back to bit me in the butt). But because I felt guilty for not painting and wanted to feel productive.. I went ahead with Harry's help and built our office chairs and the DVD rack.

Building chairs is fun.. and it's even more fun when you put things on backwards and have to un-build it. This happen to both Harry and I. And then the DVD rack.. I thought that was going to be the death of me. I guess I wasn't in the building mood.. building this DVD rack frustrated me so much.. but in the end we have some great office chairs and a pretty nice looking DVD rack.

So this day wasn't a total lose.. but I didn't do nearly as much as I wanted to.

My Saturday

Today I had planned on getting some painting down around the house.. we need to do the fixes our contractor did not complete. But before that I was going to work on my next Knights of the Guild podcast. I already edited some of the audio at work so half my job was done but when I went to import the audio file I found out it was corrupt and wouldn't play. So doing my podcast this weekend went down the tubes. By this time Harry was up so we started to do things around the house.. did a few paint touch ups here and there, but couldn't tackle the larger paint jobs (laundry room and master bathroom) because we didn't have any painters tape. I also put up all the pictures.. as we used those 3M stick up velcro things but pictures kept falling (and breaking) so I finally removed them all and went with good ol' nails.

Because we couldn't continue to paint without painters tape and other supplies. We headed to Lowes.. while out I wanted to get a DVD holder as we have out grown our three DVD shelves already. In the end we got our home supplies, picked up a larger DVD holder and stopped by Staples and got two very nice and expensive office chairs.

By the time we got home it was later and neither of us felt like painting so instead we watched six hours of Lost. We fell behind last season so we had to watch four hours form last season and then the 2 hour premiere of the final season. I knew once we started we wouldn't stop. After the 4 hours of last season it was almost midnight and I asked if Harry wanted to wait till tomorrow to watch the 2 hour premiere and he said.. we can watch them now.. it will end at 1:30ish so we stayed up and watch it..

I've loved Lost since I saw the pilot at comic con in 2004 and still loving to today.. it's confusing and crazy at times but it's such a fun roller coaster ride and I look forward to this final season. I haven't a clue what's happening or where it's going but you know what... I don't care... I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the ride.

New Hairdo

Since I've been growing my hair long I figured it was time to try something new.. I haven't highlighted my hair in over five years.. it's always scary to see how things turn out but as always it turned out pretty good.. I'm very happy with this look.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

I don't know alot about this movie.. I do know it was a series of cartoons but man it looks so cool.

Skywalker Ranch... NOT

Okay so it was a wonderful dream while it lasted but I got an email from my friend Ray, who invited me yesterday and he informed me that his job is ending on Friday and he had to rescind his invite. I was bummed but I feel bad for him as he will now be jobless months before he was expecting it. Maybe one of these days I'll actually get to visit Skywalker Ranch.

While podcasting Jenni surprised me with a picture that the very talented Matthew Brackney drew.. I totally loved it...And if you don't understand it you must not listen to my podcast Knights of the Guild

Knights of the Guild : The story of Kenny and Jenni

My friend Chris wrote this very cool article about Jenni and I and our podcast.. I love it.

by Chris
Feyrer
Check out his website HERE

Kenny Mittleider always wanted to be popular. What he didn’t know was that he would be some day, hosting the Internet podcast Knights of the Guild, the official podcast of the web series The Guild.

Mittleider, in his late thirties, is a post production supervisor in southern California and a huge self-proclaimed geek, with a major Star Wars collection and a sweet, huggable teddy-bear personality.

Enter Jenni Powell, former Lonelygirl15 crew member and transplant to the crazy world that is Los Angeles, funny, quirky, irreverent, and chasing the dream of web series industry success.

Both offered their talents to Felicia Day’s web series The Guild crew back in the first run of the off-the-wall comedy about a group of addicted gamers forced to interact offline. Back then, all was funded by PayPal and run by volunteers, with Jenni as Production assistant and Kenny working behind the scenes on featurettes and in post production. Already fans, they became even more hooked while working on the show, with the access to the awesome cast, crew, and fan base that makes up the Guild community.

Thusly, a fan podcast was born.

Powell found herself Mittleider’s partner in crime, and together “Kenny and Jenni” have built quite a name for themselves not only for their excellent coverage of The Guild but for their great repoire and hilarious online personas.

From the first edition, it was clear that this was not your every day fan podcast. With professional quality audio production, show-to-show continuity, and clever lead-ins to each section of their show, Knights of the Guild launched a year ago and became a staple for fans looking for the latest and greatest in goings-on with the Los Angeles-based web series.

Kenny and Jenni make it look easy. What fans don’t see are the hours and hours of preproduction, organizing schedules with cast members for interviews, soliciting and handling fan feedback, dealing with crazy technical difficulties, and spreading the word near and far that goes on behind the scenes.

To both of them I wanted to say bravo and congrats for a year of hilarity, unicorns, one-liners, and insightful cast, fan and crew interviews.

If you are a fan of online gaming, comedy, or social outcasts, and you still haven’t seen The Guild, please quit living under your rock and go to http://www.watchtheguild.com and then check out Kenny and Jenni’s awesome Knights of the Guild podcast at: http://knightsoftheguild.com .

Hours of laughter later, you’ll understand why the podcast has thousands of downloads and the web series is in the top ten comedies on ITunes.

Skywalker Ranch

This morning one of our guests (Ray) who stayed the night invited me to Skywalker Ranch. He works there at least until April. My jaw dropped when he invited me. I mean I was coming off of a high from the night before and the great party/podcast but this threw me into the stratosphere. I am on cloud nine.. time to plan a road trip.

1 Year Anniversary Podcast: A Look Back

WOW!!!! that pretty much sums up last nights 1 year anniversary party/podcast. First of all there was a 1 hour warm up act with Jared Hoy and Andrew Seely who were on mic because Jenni and I were running around greeting our guests and such. Once we started the podcast it continued for over four hours of guildie goodness. So much great stuff that I think I'm going to break it up into 3 or 4 podcasts. After 11:30 when the party started to break up it turned into the "After-Hours" Karaoke night. Headed up by my best bud Will along with Jay, Meagan, Ray and Jenni they were singing up a storm until 1am.

It was truly and amazing night of friends, podcasting and good times. I would like to thank all our guests for making the trek out of my house (I live in the middle of nowhere). Felicia, Kim, Michele, Brian, Fernie, Andrew, Will, Mel, Jay, Greg, Jared, Sean, Megan and Ray.

It was an awesome night and I wish we did that for every podcast.

Cleaning and KOTG Anniversary

Today I was having friends over to celebrate my 1 year KOTG (Knights of the Guild) Podcast Anniversary. The day started out with Harry and I cleaning the entire house… and there was a lot of cleaning to do. Having remodeling done for the past 2 days wasn’t much help either. To make a long and exhausting story short… we got done just in time.

Around 7 pm people started to arrive. All in all about 20 people showed up. Everyone loved our place and complimented Harry and I on our choice of the wall colors and the paint job. So I guess having spent 40+ days painting has been worth while. Daisy and Harry spent most of the time in front of the fire place. Harry attended the fire to keep it going and watched Daisy so she wasn't in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. That way she wouldn’t be freaking out. She actually did alot better than I expected. For most of the time she was fairly relaxed and was chilling out next to Harry. But of course she never left his side.

I spent most of the time in the office recording the podcast. We had some great guests lined up Felicia Day, Kim Evey, Greg Aronowitz, Sean Becker, Michele Boyd, Fernando Chien and many more. Around 1.30 am we called in the night.

Remodeling Continues Day 2

So I got home from the dinner and a play and then had to check out what our contractor had done. He said he had finished everything so I decided to check it out. Fireplace looked great, couldn't see the stain and the tile looked nice. He also sealed up around the Direct TV satellite on the roof. Seems those guys didn't seal the screw holes and that allowed water to leak into our master bedroom damage the wall. So he sealed those holes. He also sealed around another piece of the roof where he thinks the water came into our living room.. only way will know he got it is when it rains again. So that stuff was good. He re-textured the ceiling in the living room and though the white paint is slightly off it's not a bad job and is okay. The new doorway into the laundry room was wonderful.. looks just like the doorway in front of it. But the paint job in the master bathroom is horrible, at least in my opinion. The lines are not good, there are places where you can see the color that was on the wall. They painted around fixtures instead of removing them and painting under them. I was not happy about the master bathroom. Next was our master bedroom where the crack was. They re-textured the wall but didn't bother to cover anything so there was a layer of white dust from the sanding all over the floor and pillows. And to top it off they used semi-gloss paint instead of the red paint. And damaged the paint on the other wall.. so now I have to re-paint that corner to make it match everything else. Not to the laundry room.. again the painting was half ass. Looks like the did one coat and there is white all over the place. They did pull out the washer and dryer and kind of painted behind them but didn't bother to hook them back up. So will have to re-paint that room as well. As I said the doorway looked great but there was a inch think of white dust all over the pantry area. Also texture splattered onto other walls which will need to be painted again. Our contractor is great when it come to construction but lacks on the painting skills.. at least to my standards which can be high but please even leaving things half done is not good. So now it looks like because Harry and I were lazy and didn't want to paint will have to do a lot of touch up painting.

Proof

Today after work I went out to dinner with some of my Guildie friends and then to watch the play Proof which Teal Sherer who played Venom in season 3 of the Guild, produced and starred in. Dinner was fun as we went to a pizza place just down the street from the theater in North Hollywood. After dinner we walked over to the theater and enjoyed the play. I didn't know much about Proof. It's a story about a young girl who not only got her mathematics genius from her father but also may have inherited his mental sickness. The premise alone made it sound like a very dramatic play but it was very funny and sweet at times. Teal was remarkable and really shined in this play. Once it was over we hung out at the theater for a bit and chatted with Teal. It was a very fun night.

Remodeling Continues

Just when I thought we was done... since Harry and I couldn't motivate ourselves to paint the laundry and master bathroom we decided that we would hire our "handy"man Danny to do the painting for us and since he was here we would have him do a few other odds and ends around the house.

So our list grew and grew. Remove Metal Door in Laundry Room, Remove Door frame in Laundry Room and Replace, Paint Laundry Room, Paint Master Bathroom, Caulk Bathtub, Replace both Screen doors (Living Room & Master Bedroom), Fix Toilet in Guest bathroom (Finish from previous job), Roof Leak, Take down Fan and seal hole (above what use to be eat in kitchen), Patch Carpet in Master Bedroom (from where you took down the closets)

When he arrived this morning we altered a few things that we had requested.. instead of framing out the laundry room door once we remove the steel mesh door he suggested that we just turn it into a walkway with rounded curves like the walkway right in front of it. I loved the idea and approved it. The next change was the old fan that we wanted him to take down and seal up.. I realized the day before that we couldn't seal it up because we needed a light in that area so Harry and I went to Lowes and bought a really cool light that would match the living lights. Of course this morning I realized that it wouldn't work since the roof is slanted and the light hung and would stick out at a weird angle.. so before work this morning I had to run back to Lowes and exchange the light for something that would be flesh with the ceiling and less noticeable. The other add on was the fireplace. During the last rain storm a dark spot appeared on some of the tiles and we couldn't get it off.. so Danny suggested that we "seal" the tiles and it would make them all look the same. So we added that to his "to do" list.

So a little late I finally got into work. When I got home they had done about 1/2 of what needed to be done and planned to finish up tomorrow. The finally finished mounting the toilet in the guest bathroom which was part of their last job. They hung both screen doors and started painting the master bathroom. They started work on the new doorway in the laundry room and replaced the missing carpet in the master bathroom and they removed the fan/light in the pantry area and replace it with the new light I bought this morning. The toilet, screen doors and new light were fantastic.. I wasn't happy with the replaced carpet. Before there were two little sections of carpet that needed to be replace.. instead they decided to cut the entire corner off of the carpet and replace leaving this very long and noticeable line. Of course they realized this wasn't such a great idea and just replaced the two missing pieces on the other side but the damage was done. I wish they would have asked before going that route. Before with he night stand you wouldn't have noticed the two small pieces being replaced but with taking the whole corner out it's noticeable and I was not happy.

Tomorrow they have to fix the leak on the roof, patch the ceiling where the water came down, seal the tile on the fireplace, finish the doorway to the laundry room, paint the laundry room and finishing painting the master bathroom... let's hope he can get this all done by tomorrow.

Today Apple unveiled it’s newest gadget: The iPad. I watched the live blogs as they were released and got more and more excited with every new reveal. For those of you who haven't a clue what I’m talking about, let me give a short explanation:

Visiting Family

Today we went to visit my Dad, Brother, Sister-in-law and Nephew. It's been a few weeks and it was nice to visit. I had planned to take Dad to see Avatar but Harry really wasn't up for it so we took him out to our favorite Chinese place Hong Kong Restaurant and then back to the house and visited with my bro, sis and nephew. It was a short visit but fun.

Also while there Danny our contractor was doing stuff for Mike and it hit me.. why not have him come do the painting in our master bathroom and laundry room as Harry and I are never going to do it. So we plan on talking to him in the next few days to make some plans.

Shopping

Today Harry and I went shopping.. we first went to Home Depot to buy a taller ladder then we already had because of leaks on the roof and our 8 foot ladder being to small to reach it. Luckily we had some gift certificates cause ladders are expensive. We picked up a few other thinks like bush trimmer and clippers.. We also looked at prices of Generators as we both think it's a good idea to have one for a "worse case scenario". They ranged from $600 to $1200, we didn't buy one tonight but plan to get one soon.

After that we headed to Target to pick up some more accessories for the house. We got a bunch of little things but what was cool is we found a picture that would work for our guest bathroom as well as a shower curtain. I have to say our guest bathroom looks pretty nice. It's actually the first room that is 100% complete. We also picked up some more candles, can never have to many candles and we planned to pick up a coffee table but the ones they had at that Target were damages so I plan to pick one up by the Target at my work.

To Paint or not to Paint...

Well today we made another attempt to continue to paint the Master Bathroom. I started to tape of the corners in the bathroom. After that was done we tried to motivate ourselves to start with the painting itself. Well, we never managed to motivate ourselves. Both, Harry and I, are just really tired of painting. Guess the master bathroom will just have to wait a bit longer...

Snow

Today while I was at work it started to snow up at our place and not just a few flurries like before.. but really snow. I started to worry that I wouldn't be able to get home because of the snow so I left work early. It was just starting to get dark by the time I got home but there was still snow on the ground. Not as much as there was as it was already starting to melt. Harry did take some cool pictures and video so I did get to enjoy it through that..

The Perks of Podcasting

I love doing the Knights of the Guild podcast, it's a lot of work but well worth it from the positive vibes we get from our wonderful listeners. But I have to say it's nice getting some perks here and there. First we got some Geeky Cookies and now we got some Geeky Soap. They contacted me via twitter and asked if we would like to try out some of their soap.. of course I said yes and they sent me four bars of "Sexterity" soap. I plan on giving a bar to Jenni of course but also Felicia Day and Kim Evey. Will be talking about it on our next podcast but if you want to see some of there cool items you can check out their website. http://Geekysoap.com

So it begins.... Stormwatch 2010

Wow.. what day. Work was fine.. I'm talking about the weather. Today the first of four storms his and man did it hit. Because of my Jeep top not closing and having my back window opened Harry was kind enough to loan me he Dodge truck. On the way to work this morning while on the 14 the rain was coming down so hard and the wind was blowing 40 to 50 mph topped off with thick fog I couldn't see a foot in front of me. I took my time and managed to get to work without incident. While I work I kept getting updates from Harry from home. The rain was crazy but what was worse for us was the winds. They did manage to rip off two of our roof shingles but it doesn't look like it caused to much damage. The storm arrived a few hours earlier then expected so when I was going home in the evening there was nothing but wind.

Weather all over SoCal was bad, there were tornado's in the beach cities, power outages all over the place, mud slides in the burn areas and flooding. This was one of the worse days of weather that I can remember in a long time.. and this is the first of four and was suppose to be the weakest.. this is going to be a long week.

Shopping

Today Harry and I were finally able to get some shopping done. I've been wanting to go out the past few weekends but we've been just so busy. But today we hit Home Depot, ATT store and Ross. At Home Depot we picked up some shears for bushes and a rack. Now that the inside of the house is mostly done we have started to work on the outside and we are missing important pieces of equipment. So we picked up a few things.

Next we went to the ATT store so Harry could get his new phone. His plan was up and since I had gotten my new phone he has wanted to get his new phone. Of course he had to one up me and get a blackberry bold, which requires a $30 extra a month data plan, which I wasn't happy about but it made Harry happy so it made me happy.

After that we were going to do Ross then Target and look for house accessories. Well at Ross we actually found a nice painting for our guest bathroom, some odds and ends but the bit purchase was a bench for our master bedroom. We couldn't pass it up as it was the exactly color of our bed frame. Since we got that we could leave it in the back of the truck so we skipped Target and headed home. On our way home it started to rain but luckily the bench survived and didn't seem to have any water damage.

Little by little we are making this house a home.
