The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

"The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present-day. It tells the story of Dr. Parnassus and his extraordinary 'Imaginarium', a traveling show where members of the audience get an more »irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Doctor Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. An inveterate gambler, thousands of years ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr. Nick, in which he won immortality. Centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr. Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his daughter reached her 16th birthday, she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this 'coming of age' milestone and Dr. Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr. Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls. Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr. Parnassus promises his daughter's hand in marriage to the man that helps him win.

*******

From the opening scene I thought it might be a bit to far out there but the story was actually very easy to follow and made sense. The visuals were stunning and the acting was good. It's your typical Gilliam movie, off the wall, not main stream. If you like Brazil or Time Bandits or The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Then you'll probably like this film. To me it was at bit bizarre at times, but I did enjoyed it, so did my Dad who I saw it with. Would I see it again?? Maybe once but I don't think I'll be adding it to my DVD library.

AVATAR

I finally got to see this tonight.. I went after work. I did see it in DPL 3D.

I have one word for this movie.. EPIC!!! okay well I have more words. I loved this movie. It was beautiful, I could have sat there for hours watching them explore Pandora. The acting was great, Zoe who played Neytiri was awesome. I loved the story and the details about the Na'vi people. We really got to know these people. I love how they explained the connection of the planets, people, animals and the world. And did I mention that every shot of Pandora was BEAUTIFUL. You couldn't tell that the majority of this was CGI. The Na'vi looked so real and the world they lived in was fantastic. I did see this in 3D and wow what an experience. But I do think they movie would be just as beautiful and great in 2D. This wasn't your typical 3D, just so they can poke items into your face. This 3D actually made you feel like you were standing with them in their world. There were times when bugs, dust or ash was floating inches from your nose and want to swat it away. Several times when they would be looking down from a high distance my stomach would go queasy, it was so real.

I know there are people who hated the story or call it racist and I so don't understand that. But of course human beings can be cruel and intolerant at times, proof in this movie.

I can't wait to see this again and next time I want to see it in IMAX 3D. Can't wait to get back to Pandora.

Property Taxes

Today I made my first property tax payment on our house. Our bank will be making the regular property tax payments but this was a special supplemental payment because we are the new owners of this house. I opted to split the payment into two payments. But this should be the only supplemental payments we have to make. Oh the joys of home ownership.

Today I voted for my favorites in The Producers Guild of America Awards. It's fun to be part of this guild. Not only do I get DVD screeners of current movies but I get to be part of a very important award show.

New Who Preview

Here's the new trailer of the new Doctor Who, with Matt Smith taking over as the Doctor.. what do you think?? I'm excited... Can't wait!!!

Wait... What!!!

Today as soon as I walk into work Lee (building manager) informs me that they will be removing windows from the south side of the building... tomorrow. Now they have been doing construction on this place for the past few years but most of it has been in the back building and really didn't effect us up front.. well now they are starting to work on our section. They did the windows on the north wall but that didn't really effect us as we don't have anything of our offices on that side.. but the south walls we have our loggers and machine room there. I was told that they would give us a few weeks notice on when they wanted to do this. Of course over the two weeks holiday would have been best since there weren't many people here but no.. that did not work for the construction company. So I walk in and get this news first thing. First I have to go talk to my loggers and inform them that a side of their wall is going to be removed.. it's going to be loud and smell of burnt metal... oh and this is going to happen tomorrow early morning. I then had to deal with our machine room with all the $$$ machine that can't get dust in them. We also had to disconnect some of them and move with 3 feet away from the wall.

Sometimes I don't think this company really communicate with each other.. this is going to be a long day.

Clean Shaven

What do you think?? I haven't been clean shaven in awhile. Figure it's a new year, so I'll give this a try and see how long I can keep it up..

Doctor Who: The End of Time

Today Harry and I watched the final Doctor Who with David Tennant as the Doctor. We watched Part 1 of this the day after Xmas and really enjoyed it.. so I expected part 2 to be good and it didn't disappoint. I really enjoyed this episode, I liked how we got to see all the companions (Jack, Martha, Donna, Mickey, Rose...) it was like a final goodbye to these guys as we more then likely won't ever see them again. Loved The Doctor and Wilf interaction, Wilf would have made a great long time companion. It was interesting to find out that the Time Lords aren't a good people, totally didn't expect that. I was never fond of the Master and he was such a huge part of this two part finale but it didn't bother me. Who often makes me cry and this was no different.
I think it was a great ending to a wonderful run, but I'm not sad to see him go... I'm ready for a new doctor... I loved Christopher Eccleston and wasn't fond of David Tennant but grew to love him.. I expect it will be the same with Matt Smith. Can't wait for Spring and new WHO.

Vasquez Rocks

Today Harry, Daisy and I went to Vasquez Rocks, which is only a few miles from our house. This please is used in alot of movies because of it's unique rock shapes. This place was packed, had no idea it would be so popular. We hiked for almost 3 1/2 hours. Since we had the dog we couldn't go in the rally steep rocks but we did manage to climb some pretty cool rocks. Daisy is an awesome climber.. I think I had to help her down a rock only one time. It was a fun trip and we're so excited that it's so close to where we live. We plan to visit often.. it's such a good workout and a beautiful place.

Wow.. spent 8am to 11am editing our next microcast for Knights of the Guild. Seems like I have been doing a lot of editing this past week. This one is a special micro.. it's the result show for our Poetry contest. We had over 40 entries and each one was read. It's almost done and I have to say this is one of my favorite microcast.. it's so much fun hearing these poems, haiku and limericks being read out loud.

Editing KOTG

This morning I stayed home a bit longer then I had planned. I was up till 1am last night editing Knights of the Guild Microcast #13. And because it was such a cool and long interview I had to split it into two, which take twice as long to edit. So I got up at 7am and planned to work on the podcast only a few hours before heading into work. Well I was finally done with just part 1 around 11am and manage to get into work at 11:30am, which isn't bad since it's a holiday week and not many people were there. But I did manage to finish editing all of Micro 13 pt 1 and most of Micro 13 pt2.

Podcasting

Today was suppose to be a big Podcasting day.. needed to get two microcasts, one regular podcast and several promos recorded, but alas things didn't go as planned. Jenni wasn't feeling so hot so we opted to do the two microcast over skype. Our first one was a microcast for The Guild's Xmas special. We were interviewing Greg Aronowitz, who wrote, directed and created all the items in that special. Our second one was the Poetry winner microcast. Both went off without a hitch.. the audio wasn't great but Jenni managed to record her vocals on her end and I did the same on my end so I should be able to edit them together and have decent sound.

Our interview with Greg was great, so much so that we chatted for about 1 hour and 20 minutes. I think I'm going to have to split this microcast into two.. anyways it's not how I planned the day but it wasn't a total waste of a day.. also we cleaned up the house (for Jenni's visit) so now we had a clean house.

2 Great Movies

I finally got around to watching some of my screeners from the PGA. I first watched Julia and Julie. I wanted to see this when it first came out but never found the time so I was excited when I got the screener of it. It was exactly what I expected.. fun and entertaining. Both Streep and Adams were great in their roles. I love how it's based on two stories and those stories main characters never cross paths. There is a moment at the end that I thought they would be it never happens, which was kind of disappointing but "hey" it's a true story. This was a sweet, heartwarming movie and I highly recommend it.

The second the movie I watched was The Blind Side. I'm a HUGE Sandra Bullock fan and love a good rags to riches story. This too is based on a true story and it involves football. I laughed and cried during this film. It was sweet, kind and charming. It lifted you up and knocked you down. But in the end it was a very heart warming story and showed that there are still good people left in this world. Of course I loved Sandra and thought she did an outstanding job. And it was fun to see Tim McGraw acting, I love his country music but he's a pretty good actor also. All around the cast was fantastic. I would highly recommend this film as well.

So two great movie, both very different and well worth seeing.

Christmas

We spent today with my family as we have always done. One thing that was different was that it was my nephews first Xmas. Though he is too young to remember it was still nice to know this was his first.

We went to my Mom first. Got there around 10:30am, which was quicker then expected as their was barely any traffic. We spent some time chatting with mom until Mike, Lora and Kenobi arrived. Then Chuck and my grandmother arrived and we exchanged gifts. This use to take and hour as we use to get tons of gifts but this year there were very few gifts so it only took a few minutes.

Once gifts were done Mom went to the kitchen to finish making Turkey lunch, while I put together Kenobi's new high chair.

We ate a turkey lunch and all the trimmings, after that we hung out and visited till around 3pm and then packed up and headed to my Dads.

Got to Dad's about 4pm and started the night with opening gifts. Now there were a ton of these mostly for Lora and Kenobi so it took us a little over an hour to open everything. Once that was done we ate another Turkey dinner and all the trimmings. We visited for a while and then made the trek home.

It was another nice Christmas

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

The Snuggie

Harry got me a Snuggie for Xmas.. I wanted one but didn't know he got it.. was very excited.

Christmas Eve

Since we spend Christmas day with my family, Harry and I celebrate our Christmas on Christmas Eve. So we built a nice fire and hung out in the living room opening presents. It was a nice quiet evening. We both got some cool items, most we knew but there were a few surprises.. especially the digital video camera that "Santa" brought for Harry. It was a nice day.

Working the Holidays

I love working the holidays.. our company goes dark for two weeks but we are able to work if needed. Since I had editors and loggers working I figured I would come in a few days.. plus I need the money so it's was all good. I would work the first 3 days of the week and then take 4 days off and then again the following week work 3 days and take off 4 days. Plus having only 1/3 of the staff there makes my life a bit easier. Yes two weeks off would be nice but would hurt the pocket book and with the new house and remodel I can't afford to take any time real time off.. but I'll enjoy my 8 days off.

Guild Secret Santa

I'm participating in The Guild Secret Santa gift exchange. I haven't gotten my gift yet but the person I had drawen got his and he really seemed to like what I got him. He's in England so I was just happy that it got to him in time for Christmas. Here are some pictures that my buddy Markus sent.

Lazy Saturday

I love lazy Saturdays.. I have a ton of things I could be doing but sometime you just have to kick back, watch TV and hang out with those you love.

That's what I did today.. I did manage to wrap all of our Christmas presents, but that took a whole lot of effort.. but other then that I sat and watch hours and hour of recorded TV shows.

Sherlock Holmes

Today I was lucky enough to get an advance screening of the new Sherlock Holmes movie. The PRG (Producer's Guild of America) were sponsoring it. Since Harry didn't want to see it I took my friend Greg Aronowitz who really wanted to see it. It was playing at some Guild theater so no food or drinks allowed and because it was a pre-screening they didn't allow any cell phones.

Two hours flew by and what an AWESOME movie. I'm not going to give away any spoilers just my general thoughts of the film. It was a fun, murder mystery type movie. The acting was great, RDJ was the perfect Holmes and Jude Law was fantastic as Watson. It was funny, sad, action packed and kept you guessing the entire way through. I loved how it was shot and how they would slow things down and drop the audio.

I'm not a huge Sherlock Holmes fan so I don't know how true this is to the original but it was entertaining and I can't wait to see it again after Christmas. Here's hoping it does well so we can get a sequel.

Going Bald

I have been trying to deny this for the longest time but no longer.. I'm going bald!!!!

I have noticed that my hair has been getting thinner and thinner on top since my late 20's. It was hard at first because I had such a great head of curly hair all my life and now I was starting to see thinning. I went to the doctors and see if there was anything that could be done but alas he informed me that my hair lose has the characteristics of male pattern baldness.

For the next few years I tried to hide my thinning hair. I would grow it out and since it was long and curly I was able to comb it in a way where you couldn't see the thinning. Then while getting a hair cut the stylist told me that if the hair is shorter the thinning is less noticeable and she was right.. so I started shaving my head every few months and kept my hair super short.. that worked for a while but this last year life's been a bit stressful (buying a house) and I have notice that my hair has gone from thinning to being bald.

I don't know what changed but instead of trying to hide it or be embarrassed by it, I embraced it.. so I'm going bald, I don't know if I'll go completely bald (at least on top) but you know what.. I don't care. I can't do anything about it as I'm not buying a toupee.. I may try hair transplant down the road but for now I just have to live with it.

So here I am in all my baldness :)

Putting up the tree

Well it's a two weeks late but we are finally putting up and decorating our new Christmas Tree. This year has been a bit different. Not only are we two weeks late from when I normally like to get a tree but this year we got a fake Christmas tree. Took some doing be we got the tree put together and fluffed. We then put additional lights (colored) on, then bulbs, then orinments and finally candy canes. And to top it off we put on our new tree topper.. Jedi Yoda. I have to say this is one of my favorite trees we have had. With the decorations around the living room everything really came together well. Check out the video below..

Xmas Tree and Family

Today the weather was much better, but regardless of the weather I was going to put up Christmas lights and we were going to get a Christmas Tree. So I started early in the morning on our back deck hanging lights on the back of the house since that was the part that over looked the hill and that folks would see the most. I didn't want to put staple holes in the trim of the house so I stapled the lights to the top of the roof. I manage to cover the back side of the house and then had to figure out how and what I was going to do for the rest of the house. First of all I didn't have a tall enough ladder to get on the roof. I didn't want to put holes on the trim and I really couldn't figure out where I wanted all the lights.. so I opted to not put lights up this year.. it's only 12 more day till Christmas and this was much more a hassle then it should have been. I'll do it next year and have a better game plan before the time comes. So with that I pulled down the few that I had put up and once Harry was up we went Christmas Tree shopping.

We normally get our trees from Home Depot as they have nice and cheap trees. Before that we went a little Christmas shopping at Target and while there we checked out some of the artificial trees. Both Harry and I have talked about getting one but I have been opposed to them for the longest time but this time around and they fact that they look so real now I was interesting in getting one. Target was having a 50% off sale on all their trees. We found two that we liked.. one pre-lite and one not.. the one that wasn't pre-lite looked a bit nicer and we both agreed that , that was the one for us.. of course they were sold out. They did have 2 of the other pre-lite ones but instead we decided to head 30 minutes south to the Santa Clarita Target and see if they had the tree that we really liked. We figured if they didn't we would get the pre-lite one from them.. as surely they would have some.

Well we get to the second Target and they had less then the first and were out of both Trees that we liked. We went next door to Lowes and there artificial trees were not an sale and didn't look as good. We checked out there live trees and they were the most pathetic things we saw. We opted to head back to the first Target and hope that one of the 2 pre-lite trees were still there.. if not we could always go to Home Depot, which was are original plan. Our luck changed and they still have one of the pre-lite trees that we liked. So we got a $300 tree for $150. Can't wait to put it up.

Oh while at Target we came across one of the best Tree Toppers around..

Took us almost 4 hours to get the tree but we came home for a half hour, visited with the dog and then headed to my Dad's to visit. Got to Dad's around 6pm and went out to our favorite Chinese restaurant and then back to his place to visit my brother, sister-in-law and nephew Kenobi. Spent about 3 hours with them and finally head home.. got home around 10:30pm and we were tired.. figured we will put the tree up after work tomorrow.. can't wait.

Doctor Horrible Comic Books

With all this gloomy weather there was a bright spot.. I got my Doctor Horrible Comic book. It came out a few weeks ago but sold out quickly so I ordered mine from Ebay and got it today.... and because I'm a geek I had to have all three covers. Can't wait to read it...

Xmas Tree Shopping.. NOT

Today was my big day.. I as going to put up Christmas lights and go out and buy our Christmas tree. I was very excited because it's only a few weeks till Christmas and this is the latest I have very done these things. Well we have had cold weather and rain the past few days and today was no different.. it rained and rained. Instead we were stuck in the house, which wasn't a bad thing just not what we wanted to be doing today.. we did manage to head into town to get some groceries but that was about all we did outside and it rained, rained and rained.

Rain or Shine.. I'm buying my Christmas Tree and putting up lights tomorrow!!!!

New Harry Potter DVD's

Got my new Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince blu-ray DVD but what I really was excited to get was my Harry Potter Year 1 & 2 Ultimate Edition DVD. There are some cool new extras, the movies have the deleted scenes cut back into them and for the first time directors commentary. They are releasing two years every years.. Years 1 & 2 in 2009., Years 3 & 4 in 2010, Years 5 & 6 2011 and Years 7pt1 & 7pt2 n 2012. Can't wait till I can watch them.

What a Morning

Today I had a doctors appointment. My doctor is out in West Hollywood and the appointment was for 9:20am. So not knowing how long it would take to get to West Hollywood and the fact it was raining I got up at 6:30am and left my house by 7am. Traffic was actually not bad and the rain wasn't coming down hard so things were looking up. I got to my doctors office at 8:20am and found a metered spot right our front... looking good.

So I had an hour to kill. I had brought my netbook that Harry had bought me for my birthday. I was hoping to find some open wifi and surf the net.. bamm a very strong open signal, so I sat in my jeep listening to Christmas music and surfing the net.. life was good... until....

Around 9am I figure I would start packing up my computer and get ready to head up to the doctors office. As I was getting out of my car I pulled the keys out of the ignition and my warning bell went off.. it means my headlights are on. I then thought to myself.. "Oh Crap!!!! I had my engine off, headlights on and the radio on for the past hour... please, please battery don't be dead.. " I go to start the car and nothing.. I try again and get the familiar click click click sound of a dead battery. Okay.. not horrible, I'll call AAA when I get out of the appointment and they will come and give me a jump. So I exit the jeep and walk over to the meter and start to put quarters in. first quarter :15 minutes, second quarter :30 minutes, third quarter :30 minutes, fourth quarter :30 minutes.. wait a minute.. I'm parked in a 30 minute only metered spot and my appointment was still 20 minutes.. No problem that's plenty of time to find another parking spot... So I start to head back to my driving side when it hits me that my jeep battery is dead. I can't move the car.. so I'm stuck with a doctors appointment in 15 minutes and my jeep is at a :30 minute parking only.

I said screw it and hoped for the best.. I put in another quarter and brought my time up to :30 minutes and headed to my doctors office. I sat there watching the time click by as my :30 minute disappeared. Now I could only hope I get down there before a meter maid got to my meter. Thirty minutes pass the allotted time I head back down to my car and sure enough there is parking ticket on the wind shield for $40 bucks.

Sometimes life just SUCKS!!! But on a positive note I got in my jeep and after a few drives it started right up.

Rain, Rain and More Rain

Winter has begun.. well maybe not on the calendar but up where we live it's been getting colder and colder every night..on average we hit about 22f at night and today it's the start of what they say will be a wet week. I'm happy for us because we need the rain.. it not only waters all our planets but replenishes our well.. so yay rain.. just wish it was cold enough to actually now. Everytime it starts to rain the temp goes up to about 37f .. oh well.. this is only the beginning.

And it continues

Yep.. today we spent all day trying to figure out the one audio issue we were having. We knew it was a bad clip but we couldn't find it.. we narrowed the two hour show to 1 hour, then 30 minutes, then 15 minutes then 4 minutes then 2 minutes and finally at the end of the day we found the clip that was causing the issue and fixed it.. Now it seems to be back in order..

Along the way we had tape issues.. not so much our issue but they couldn't find tapes that were needed for digitizing. So spent hours looking for a few tapes that I knew we did not have in our building.

Is this week over yet??

No Snow

Woke up this morning and looked out side but there was no snow.. at least not on our property. We are surrounded by hills that are about a 1000 feet higher then us and they were all snow capped. Our house, deck, and cars were all layered in a thin sheet of ice. It was 24 F outside and it was painfully cold. We have another storm coming on Thursday.. maybe will actually get snow that will stick this time. I'll keep you posted.

Cold, Rain and... SNOW

Today was our first winter storm.. it rained all day long, sometimes hard and sometime light. Traffic was horrible coming into work but I managed to take an alternate way into work so it wasn't that bad. While at work Harry would send reports of lakes forming at our house. The Grapevine was shut down because of snow and I figured it was going to be horrible traffic going home, but once on the road traffic was light. Maybe everyone was avoiding the 5 because of the shut down but I got into Agua Dulce in no time. I was almost home when Harry called and said that the once lakes in our driveway area were now frozen over and that I needed to be careful. As I was driving down the dirt road I noticed stuff falling from the sky.. it wasn't rain as it was not hitting my wind shield. When I got home I got out of my jeep and realized that it was actually snowing. It wasn't alot but it was snow.. I was very excited as I've only seen snow fall a few times in my lifetime and now it was snowing at my house. I was hoping it would rain again as it was now in the low 20's and if it rained it would snow for sure... guess will find out tomorrow when I wake up.

Work Hell Continues

Of course after a horrible week last week I was hoping this week would be better since we got our recap done and didn't have anything due until Jan 2010.. well first thing I get a call and was informed that there was an issue with the audio of the recap.. spent the rest of the day trying to figure out what the issue was.. couldn't do it so now we have to go bit by bit and check clip by clip and see if we can figure out where the bad clip is... not how I wanted to start my week.

Top Secret Shoot

Today I spent all day on a top secret shoot.. from 7:30am to 8:30pm. While on the shoot I did meet some celebrities Brea Grant, she played Daphne from Heroes and David Blue from Stargate Universe and Ugly Betty. That was alot of fun. I can't say much more about the project excepted my buddy Greg Aronowitz the very talented SFX guru directed it. I was an extra in several scenes as well as shooting behind the scenes and still photos.. guess I'm getting known for that now. Once this is released I'll be able to share more stories and pictures. It was a long but very fun day.

Decorating for Christmas

After our friends left for the day.. Harry and I went into our decorating mode, well I did at least, Harry helped where needed. This will be our first Christmas in our new home.. This is my favorite holiday and I love decorating. I decided to decorate only the living room area and I think it turned out pretty nice. We still have to get our Christmas tree (hopefully this week) but I'm liking how it's turning out.

House Guest/ BBQ

Today we had our very first house guests.. we had a BBQ and several of our friend made the Trek up to our new house. It was great fun to show them around the property. We had several firsts.. we used our fireplace for the first time and we also used our dining table. It was alot of fun hanging out in our living room with the fire roaring and just chatting. No TV, just good ol' conversation. They seemed to really like our place. Here are some pixs we took next to our first fire.

Recording a Podcast

After a hard and long day at work I had to get home to record a microcast with Jenni.. we had done a contest for our Knights of the Guild podcast that had ended on Dec. 1st and folks were waiting for the winner. I wanted to announce it in a podcast so Jenni and I recorded the intro and outro. After recording it I realized I had made a mistake and then we recorded again and once again I had made a mistake and we recorded for a third time. So it seemed my horrible luck at work followed me home.. we eventually got it done and it turned out great.. I'll be posting it tomorrow.
