A Healthier Me - Day 3

Day 3 or my new working out and eating regime. Working out is going great, sore as can be but feeling good. It takes a little pushing and motivation to get me out to the garage but once I'm out there it's smooth sailing. Now eating on the other hand... I know it would be tough for me. I've always eaten really poorly and it's not going to change over night. I had a small bowl of honey nut cheerios for breakfast, then while I was out getting the oil changed on my truck I stopped by El Pollo Loco and got me a chicken bowl (which has chicken, rice and beans). Before you write nasty comments I'm allowing myself to eat out once a week. Which is huge since I would eat out everyday for lunch. I hope within time I'll knock it down to once a month.. but baby steps to begin with. For dinner I made me a tuna sandwich (with way to little miracle whip) and some baked chips. Surprising I didn't do any snacks. I also had one diet coke.. which is great since I normally drink 3 cans of diet coke a day.

While I was out I picked up some plain low sodium rice cakes from Ralphs that I really enjoyed. I grabbed six bags since I figure I have eat one or two of these a day to take care of the snacking issue.

I posted a picture of me with my rice cakes on facebook and I got a large amount of comments about diets, what not to do, what to do.. the biggest was eating more veggies. Of course I wrote back that I'm not a big veggie eater and that veggies will be my biggest hurdle. Well I got comments like "You should start doing veggies" and "You should learn to like your veggies".. it's like I've hated them for over 40 years but now I'm suppose to instantly start liking them.. I don't think so. I will work on eating more veggies but I know myself better then anyone and it will be a uphill battle

Today's Workout:

30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical

3 sets of 10 for shoulders (45 lbs)
3 sets of 10 on the front leg press (45 lbs)
3 sets of 10 on the chest fly for my chest (75 lbs)
3 sets of 10 on the curl arm for my biceps (45 lbs)

Like I said workout went great.. easily did 30 minutes of cardio and took it easy on my weights since I'm still sore from the previous two days of workout... but I did manage to get some in.

All in all I'm happy with how things are going. As I tweeted earlier today.. "This new eating lifestyle is tough.. I've been doing it for 3 days and I've been hungry for 3 days." I know in time my stomach will shrink and I won't feel as hungry all the time.. but until then.. I'm soooo hungry!!!!

  1. Try lowfat cottage cheese if you don't like veggies. It helped me. Very filling.

  2. Also don't starve yourself, just try to make exercise a daily habit.

  3. I hear you Kenny on the Veggies. I don't like them either and never will, but my wife makes me eat them. I try to eat more fruit, but still acknowledge the Veggies are important. I eat a lot of cereal, so I try to get some fiber that way through bran.

  4. Hey Kenny, I'm sure you've seen my post on your other blog? Well I have a recommendation on the Veggies that coincides with my comment of your other blog post. Adding soup to your meals is a great way to fit in something that is low calorie, full of veggies, adds fluid intake, and is quite filling. And if you make the soup yourself at home you can eliminate the extra unnecessary sodium intake that comes with canned soup. A really easy soup you can make is something my mom used to make. She called it "hamburger soup" and it's SUPER easy to make.

All you need is some ground up hamburger, a bag of frozen mixed veggies, a couple of potatoes, a can of V8, an onion, some garlic, basil, and cayenne pepper. Cook and drain the meat. Chop up the potatoes, onion, and garlic. Throw all the bag of veggies, potatoes, onion, garlic, cooked hamburger, and V8 into a pan on the stove. Cook until potato pieces are soft, onion is cooked all the way, etc. And season with basil and cayenne pepper to taste.

IF you are feeling more adventurous, most diets tend to be deficient in the dark green leafy veggies like spinach and collard greens, you could throw in some of that chopped up too, and the red-orange type of veggies, like bell peppers and carrots. Carrots should be in the mixed veggies, but usually you can find frozen peppers and onions chopped into strips at the store with the frozen veggies section so you could pick up a bag of that along with the frozen veggie mix and leave off the fresh onion and save yourself chopping up something that might make you cry too. :)

    Hopefully that helps.

  5. I know I already wrote something on here as a comment, lol. You said you're hungry all the time? You should have healthy snacks, I know you said you don't like veggies, but do you like fruit? An apple is high in fiber and only adds a minor amount of calories.

I'm going to delve briefly into my personal issues now, on your blog, sorry, but I'm struggling with eating healthy because I've pretty much determined that I have pretty severe food/self-esteem issues. But lately (I think) I've been doing better. I've been eating 3x most days, and eating over 1500 calories, which is a lot better than I was. But what I have been eating might help you. I know you said on facebook you aren't counting calories, but some simple things I've been eating, I already said my 1/2 sandwiches on your other blog, and the soup I posted here.

Usually for breakfast I have a grain in the form of a slice of toast with peanut or almond butter and raw flax seeds sprinkled on top or a bowl of bran flakes with a tablespoon of raw flax seeds and milk, some fruit in the form of an orange, an apple, a banana, etc. and protein in the form of either 1 whole egg and 1 egg white or 2 turkey sausage links or 1 egg or egg white and 1 turkey sausage link.

For dinner I usually have a whole grain pasta or brown rice with a portion of meat and some veggies. You seem to really like potatoes, do you like sweet potatoes? From what I've read they have more nutrition than white potatoes.

A few things to keep in mind... Vitamin C helps you absorb iron. Vitamin D helps you absorb calcium. Not eating enough fiber has been linked to colon cancer. Eating and drinking sugar can make you feel more hungry than you really are. If you feel hungry, try drinking water. Sometimes our mind tricks us into thinking we're hungry when we are really just thirsty. If that doesn't work, try reaching for something healthy like celery with peanut butter or an apple.
